Wrap – Week Ended 08/09/14

YoYo market and group conditions remain in effect as we approach the fifth week of the 2Q14 energy earnings reporting season. Not that we care about weekly performance but last week we YoYo'd to the green side by 2.5 to 6% depending on the account with the ZLT's ranging from up 9% to up 29% YTD. The SPX is up 4.5%, the XLE is up 9.2% and the other energy indexes we track are up 10 to 12%.

Please see Monday's post for the wrap of all the reporting company highlights in The Week That Was section.

All questions in the comments section under the Wrap will be addressed in the Subscriber Mailbag section of the Monday Post.

The calendar for week 5 will be posted tomorrow to the calendar tab and will be included in the Monday post.

One statistic i'd like to add to the indices above…..Dow is DOWN on the year about a tenth of a percent. Unemployment numbers coming in under 300k weekly now and GDP grew 4% last quarter….and there are folks claiming we are in a bubble?

Z..many thanks for the work you do day in and day out covering the names for us and answering our questions.

One question that struck me after the week ended was the why the trading buy/add of HK?   I understand operationally the company is executing and the stock corrected from its highs and might even benefit from the recent TMS news out of GDP.  I own a core position there as well for those reasons.  But the stock corrected no more or less than other names that appear relatively cheaper that are also executing such as PVA, REXX, CPE, OAS, SWN.  I guess I thought you would add a new name or add to one of the "cheaper" names.  Thanks.

I also want to re-ask a question that I raised yesterday about the "big picture" for the sand suppliers like HCLP.SLCA, EMES vs the ceramic prop company CRR.  Being long sand and short ceramic has paid well and I'm wondering if the trade continues to make sense and whether you think the use of ceramic prop still has value ?  I believe AR mentioned they were using ceramic in some new wells while ROSE is discontinuing use altogether.  Is that market growing or shrinking?  Any insight you could provide would be helpful.

    Enjoy the weekend.

    re: 2

over 30% drop from recent high on great TMS vibe coming from others in the region. but on its own merits, last quarter proved that Floyd has his mind on making money and not financing the heck out of the company.  big short position to boot.

also re 2 – it seemed that while many of our stocks were down on "bad news" (however small or trivial) there wasn't even that much of a flimsy excuse for HK to be down (other than general sympathy with the market and sector) – except for maybe some general unease (at the time) about the TMS (even though the TMS is still a relatively minor component of what makes HK tick).  Therefore, without a real "reason" for it specifically to be down, HK has as decent a chance as any to make a strong comeback.  (Versus REXX, for example, which is executing well, growing, and cheap, will also be challenged by low local prices for a while.)
