Wrap – Week Ended 10/26/07 (In Progress)
Despite persistent technical problems with my site hosts internet provider we had a great week.
In A Nutshell: Huge week for oil which drove up the energy sectors and while the broader market at times detests high oil prices it did not in the past week as oil hit a nominal record trading high of $92.22 before settling back at $91.86 for the week. The inflation adjusted high, set back during the Iranian crisis (yes them again) in 1980 was just over $101 per barrel.

Z basic question for you…What exactly are distillates? Is that like diesel fuel?? Does heating oil count as a distillate?? Thanks.
October 27th, 2007 at 4:15 pmyea they are both grouped into that category, and also too i believe ultra low sulfur diesel and jet fuel are all grouped into that same category– distillates.
z helped me with this one a while back, and im sure he’ll see this and correct anything i said wrong.
October 27th, 2007 at 10:31 pmThanks T – yeah that’s right. Lots of different grades of distillates …this is what comes off the bottom of the barrel (higher temperature part of the cracking process), everything from heating oil to diesel for cars and trucks to kerosene (jet fuel).

for way more than you want or need to know about the refining process. See slide 7 for a graphic of the crack tower tower and products that come out of the process.

October 28th, 2007 at 7:32 amOk, got this from my host at 3.43 am:
“One of our peering networks discovered the error in their router
configurations from their previous maintenance and fixed it.”
I guess an apology for a 4 day service outage would have been out of line.
I found no change in performance until I complete shut down my browser, restarted it, and then reopened the site. Can some folks try that for me today? And I apologize for the difficulties.

October 28th, 2007 at 10:56 amThanks Z and T…I’ll read up on that cracking process…Have an interview tomorrow and have no clue what the heck they’re gonna ask…
October 28th, 2007 at 11:26 amai trader, re#17, do you know when ptr reports? ceo & snp report on tues. the stock is worth lke $150 to the entire “developed” world, and there is like 14 share held outside the government’s pocket in the public float. ceo and snp are going to disappoint and looking at the chart pattern in all three (but mostly ptr, since it is the largest and most liquid issue, which makes for more compelling foretelling chart patterns), it appears to be a consolidation or coil pattern which usually means a big move in either direction.
i was mulling rediculously out of the money puts ($175-$185) with some speculative money. could be up at 1500% return if everone runs for the doors, but who knows maybe the chicoms wont let them sell their stock if they want out. they seem to control everything else
October 28th, 2007 at 11:53 ami was just looking, and ptr has 200 million shares in the public float lol, xom has like 5.5 billion, and they have been buying them back like crazy over the past 5 years/!

October 28th, 2007 at 2:36 pmGreat week and picks and excellent site. thanks.
T – not a clue on when PTR reports. I’ve got a list of firms’ Q3 earnings release dates and this is one of the question marks. The other one is DRYS – anyone know when they report? (Last year it was Nov 21).
